The working principle of explosion-proof motors is mainly achieved through a series of structural design and material selection to ensure the safe operation of motors in flammable and explosive environments. Specifically, it includes technical means such as explosion-proof shell, increased safety structure, and intrinsic safety circuit, which isolate the possible fire sources inside the motor from the external hazardous environment, thereby achieving the purpose of explosion prevention.

The following are the specific working principles of several common explosion-proof types:
Explosion proof type (d): An explosion-proof enclosure is used to separate electrical components that may generate sparks, arcs, and hazardous temperatures from the surrounding explosive gas mixture. The shell is not sealed, but when explosive flames or hot gases are transmitted through the gap between the joint surfaces, they cannot ignite the surrounding explosive gas mixture.

Increased safety type (e): Based on the motor structure that does not generate arcs, sparks, or dangerous high temperatures during normal operation, further measures are taken to improve safety, such as increasing electrical clearances and creepage distances, and improving insulation performance.
Intrinsic safety type (i): By limiting the energy in the circuit, the electric spark and thermal effect generated by the motor under normal operation or specified fault conditions cannot ignite the specified explosive gas environment.

Positive pressure type (p): Safety is achieved by maintaining the pressure of the protective gas inside the equipment casing above the pressure of the surrounding explosive environment, using static positive pressure or continuous air or inert gas flow to restrict the entry of flammable mixtures into the interior of the casing.

Dust explosion-proof motor: Its casing is designed and manufactured according to specified conditions, which can prevent dust from entering the motor casing. Although it cannot completely prevent dust from entering, the amount of entry does not hinder the safe operation of the motor. The accumulation of internal dust is not easy to cause ignition hazards, and it will not cause explosive dust mixture explosions in the surrounding area during use.

Explosion proof motors are mainly used in fields such as coal mines, oil and gas, petrochemicals, and chemical industries, as well as in sectors such as textiles, metallurgy, urban gas, transportation, grain and oil processing, papermaking, and pharmaceuticals.
